right now you can try out realnetworks’ rhapsody for free without registering a single piece of info. it is completely open to *25* song plays.
being that I am now the (semi)proud new owner of a non-apple mp3 player - the sandisk sansa e280 (review in process) - I have been shopping around for a good music-subscription service because the technology is finally to a point where we can feel good about putting money in the music machine again. I see these services creating a new era (utopian?) for some musicans, but I digress.
1) - a song play is only decremented from your total when you reach the 30 second mark. this means you can pause at 29 seconds and start over, or load up a different track without penalty.
2) - you can rewind a track at the very end of play, if you wish to hear it again without decrement to your 25 freebies.
3) - the most contraversial: it is possible to reset your 25. the real rhapsody servers are not that smart. no, the info isn’t stored in your cache, or a cookie, heavens no. so what to do? I stumbled upon this by accident - as I was registering an unlimited account, I proceded through a couple steps then changed my mind (still shopping). later, I went back to play a song through rhapsody an’ low-an-behold, all 25 song plays were back.
to summarize: reset your 25 plays by beginning to register an unlimited account then backout as soon as it asks for personal info.
*this may not last long, it’s a pretty big flaw, but heck, this could be a pretty tricky one for developers.
